So a lot of Doodly users usually say that Doodly is so easy to navigate, it is user-friendly, and first-time users can use the software without any hassle. While Doodly users are raving fans, others can’t seem to make up their mind if they want to try the software or not, especially those without video editing skills. Let’s face it, not everyone has time to learn a new skill. Who wants a complicated software? I bet no one does.
Having a user-friendly software has something to do with its interface. In this article, we will take a peek at Doodly’s interface, the function of each icon, and more.
When you first log in to Doodly, you will see the My Videos page.
My Videos page is a dashboard listing all of your Doodly projects along with some resources that are available to you.
Let’s take a closer look.
The top portion of the dashboard displays the thumbnails of your most recent videos.
Clicking the thumbnail immediately routes you to the “Edit Video” page where you can work on your video to modify or make changes.
You also have easy access to Create New Video from this view.
The middle portion consists of 2 tabs: Projects and Templates
The Projects Tab displays all your folders as well as the title of the videos you’ve created. It also displays details such as the date and time when the video was created, modified, the length of the video, the number of scenes used and some helpful actions such as open, rename, duplicate and delete.
If you right-click one of the videos, you also get the same actions menu:
The duplicate option is really handy when creating a similar video theme. You do not have to recreate everything, just click duplicate and modify your video however you want it. It works just like a base or template!
Speaking of template, let’s take a look at the Templates tab.
On this tab, you will see all the available free templates that are included in your package which are all arranged per category.
The categories available are the following:
The templates you purchased also appear on the templates tab.
Can’t find a certain template? Head on to the marketplace and browse through all the available templates. There are tons of templates to choose from!
At the mid-bottom section, you have links to access:
At the bottom section, you will see the Doodler Toolbox where it shows the list of other products that fellow Doodlers enjoy.
If you wish to purchase any of it, you can just simply click it and it will direct you to the signup page.
Let’s dig in some more by creating a video.
To create a video just click the Create New Video menu at the top right-side of the dashboard.
This will open another screen where you can select which board Style you want, place a catchy Title, and choose your Resolution.
Can’t think of a title? Unsure what board style to use? Or maybe undecided as to what resolution to choose? Don’t worry, all these settings can be changed at any point. You can always go back and change it.
Okay, so now, we’re inside the Edit Video view. Let’s look at each menu and functions.
The Asset Panel is located at the left side of the Edit Video view.
It contains all of the different parts and components that will make up your whiteboard video.
These are the scenes, characters, props, text, sounds, and marketplace.
The Categories menu arranges the items in different ways based on the category type.
Items within the Club tab are for enterprise users and new images are added here every month.
Shared items are items that you may have shared with other users. The little beach ball just right beside the shared menu turns the doodly rainbow on and off if you have that feature in your package.
To create a video, you need a scene and characters for your project. There are two ways to place assets in your video. You can either drag and dropor double click.
Once the assets are in place, you can move them around, adjust their size and even align them.
Speaking of alignment, Doodly lets you use a grid so you can properly align each character. This is very handy especially when you’re adjusting the distance of each asset in your project. You can keep the grid on while working on your video or hide it the entire time.
The timeline has multiple tracks: pan and zoom, video, music, voice-over
Let’s checkout each of these tracks starting with pan and zoom track.
Pan and Zoom Track
Pan and zoom feature is usually best used when you are done setting all the characters in your scenes. This function allows you to make the camera focus on your preferred asset or direct the camera towards a certain direction.
To enable this function, just click the + sign on pan & zoom settings within the timeline.
Video Track
The video track contains all the scenes you use for your project.
If you wish to add another scene, just click the + sign beside the last scene on your video track. A whiteboard will appear ready for your new scene and characters. Just simply drag and drop the assets to your canvas and you’re ready to modify them once again.
Sounds Track
Doodly comes with a large library of royalty-free music that you can use on your videos. Just click the Sounds menu, browse through the list of sounds available, listen to it and drag your chosen sound to the music timeline. You can also upload your own background music.
Voice-over Track
Voice-over track lets you record your own voice while the video plays. To add a voice-over, just click the + sign on the voice-over track and start talking. You can also move the recording within the voice-over track to your desired timeframe for proper voice syncing.
Another great feature is the Video Settings.
Video Settings is also located within the timeline and it has lots of great features to help you personalize your Doodly video. It is divided into 3 columns. Let’s take a closer look at each menu.
Video Settings: First column
Background Style – The background style allows you to change the board to whatever you prefer it to be. You can even upload your own board!
Subtitles – This option allows you to turn on and off the subtitle for the entire video duration.
Doodly Rainbow – You can enable or disable the color of your video by turning the doodly rainbow menu on or off. If it is off, it turns off the colors of your scenes and characters making it all black and white. You can check your Doodly Toolbox to see if this feature is included in your package.
Video Settings: Second column
Background
The middle column gives you the option to personalize your board. Note that the options you see here change based on the background style you have selected. On this menu, you can change the color of your board and upload your own image.
Hand Style
The hand style menu allows you to choose an image of either a left-handed or right-handed hand. You can also pick from using either a real hand, a cartoon hand, or no hand at all. If it is a cartoon hand and you’re using a glassboard, you can decide to use either a 2D hand or a 3D hand. There are just so many possibilities with Doodly!
Video Settings: Third column
The menu on the third column allows you to modify the following:
Title – This is just one of the many locations within Doodly where you can change your video title.
Video Ends when – This gives you two dropdown options:
Scene transition – this menu lets you select your scene transition as your video plays. There are 7 options to choose from.
Erase mode – So when the hand is writing and does the erase gesture, you can select from 4 erase mode options: smart mode, with finger, with eraser, or just turn off the erase gesture.
Resolution – This menu lets you set up your video resolution from 360p up to 1080p. So your audience will be watching your video via social media such as FB and IG? We have it covered! Just select Facebook & Instagram from the resolution’s dropdown menu. Or, if you will be playing your video to a different platform that has a specific resolution requirement, you can then choose Custom from the dropdown menu and type in your desired resolution.
Before we let go of the Video Settings, let me just point out another important menu located at the bottom of it, which is the Autosave. This lets you save your video automatically every minute so you don’t have to save it every now and then. Also, you don’t lose your work.
Just right across the asset panel are the actions menu, scene, tools, and layers.
The actions menu lets you save your work to its existing title or save it to a different one.
The export menu lets you export your video to different video formats and even change resolution.
Scene settings allow you to make changes on a scene-by-scene basis. If you notice, it is somewhat similar to Video Settings except that all changes you made are per scene.
Under the Scene Settings, you can change the background, hand style, and change the animation at the end of each scene. By default, the animation at the end of your video is set to swipe left but you can change that anytime.
Also, you can add extra time at the end of each scene. This is really helpful because oftentimes once the hand stops drawing, you want that image to stay on for a little bit longer before it disappears.
The Scene Settings is also where you place your subtitles.
You also have some font settings here to set up font color, size, background, and opacity.
Tools menu lets you adjust the size of canvas depending on your preference.
The Layers menu lets you control the different items’ delay points and duration times. Adding a delay means the item will start drawing after the amount of time has elapsed while duration is how long it takes for the hand to draw the image.
You’ll notice as you increase or decrease the length of time, the change is reflected down the timeline.
If you’d like more space for your canvas, you can hide both of the panels by clicking the arrows and only show them when you need them.
You may notice there are two types of previews. You have the full-screen preview at the upper right-hand side and you have the smaller preview at the top left side that shrinks down the image.
The Preview button on the top right-hand side allows you to view your video and review the changes you made on each scene.
The smaller preview where it says Show/Hide Preview creates two views: The left view is where you can immediately play your scene right after you make changes and the right view is where your editable scene is.
The upper right-hand side of the screen gives you a link to your account details as well as the Logout option.
In the middle, is the title of your current video. You can change the name of the title if you like by just going in and typing right over it.
Clicking My Videos will take you right back to your dashboard.
And that concludes our review of Doodly’s interface. I hope this article gives you a clear view of how it feels to navigate and use Doodly. 🙂
