Doodly is a whiteboard animation software that is commonly used when creating explainer videos, and short clip ads. It is a favorite tool in the marketing space. Apart from marketing, Doodly is also an ideal software to use in education. It makes teaching fun, especially these days when students attend school at home online due to the pandemic.
Doodly’s whiteboard animation style of teaching is a perfect way to capture student’s attention. At the same time, it is a great aid for teachers too. If you are in the education space and just recently purchased Doodly, this blog is for you. Today, we are going to provide you ideas that will help you fully maximize the use of Doodly in your niche.
Doodly is great for all education levels from preschool to higher education. So what are the different ways to use Doodly in the education space? There are quite a few ways. We have outlined below some of these ideas.
You could use Doodly to:
If you’re a math teacher, you will love to use Doodly in explaining mathematical operations to your students. You can easily glue your student’s eye on the presentation the moment the animated hand starts writing on the whiteboard. Apart from math problems, you can also use Doodly for almost anything that requires illustration or a need to explain a concept.
School announcements can be fun with the use of Doodly. In fact, most teachers who are Doodly users notify their students about upcoming projects, assignments, and meetings using Doodly.
You can also use Doodly to create a pre-quiz review. Especially if your topic requires pictures or diagrams, Doodly can best present it via whiteboard animation. It will be easier to recall topics when it is associated with pictures.
If you are holding a back-to-school night or maybe you have some information you want to share with parents, you can use a Doodly video to communicate that.
Hosting video lessons on YouTube is a great way to share information with your students. Once you make it, you can use these videos year after year. Consider starting a YouTube channel and posting Doodly videos to it. If you are worried about unauthorized viewing of your content, you can always set your videos to either private or unlisted. When it is unlisted, your video is hidden when searched. Your students can only access your video using the link you will provide. If you want complete privacy, you can set your video to private and just add the email addresses of the people you allow to view your content.
You could also use your Doodly account for student projects. You would need to sign in and then allow the student to work within the software. Doodly is so easy to use. Your students will pick it up right away.
Here are some more tips that you can use when teaching:
Consider getting a custom character made to represent you. Guaranteed, your students will love it. Doodly offers a service for this or you could use a freelancer. You can check out Fiverr and hire someone to create one for you. That’s a great way to do it quickly. Or, you can also just use an app that allows you to create a cartoon version of yourself. You can place your custom-made character at every presentation you create just like a watermark.
Make sure to try out the different backgrounds and hand styles. Doodly has hands in different skin tones and genders. Pick one that represents you best. Your students might even think it’s really you.
Consider combining your Doodly videos with PowerPoint especially if you anticipate student questions or the need to start and stop. What you’ll want to do is create the short segments in Doodly and then export them as mp4 videos. Then you go into your PowerPoint program, create your slides like you normally would, and then import your segments into the appropriate slide.
If you’re still teaching virtually due to the pandemic, I’m sure you have tried using Zoom as well as other video conferencing tools to conduct your class. Since the class is being conducted online, sharing your screen is needed to efficiently discuss the lessons. There is a proper way of sharing screen and here’s how you do it in zoom:
a. Sharing screen in Zoom
Start a zoom meeting. When you’re already logged in, you will see several icons at the bottom of your screen. One of them is Share Screen. Click it to share your screen.
As soon as you tick Share Screen, another screen will pop up with 3 tabs to choose from. These are the Basic, Advanced, and Files tab.
Basic Tab
From the Basic tab, the first option provided is to share your entire screen. You wouldn’t want students to see all apps and windows that are currently open on your computer. Having said that, you must only choose the application you wish to share.
Apart from the option to share your entire desktop and specific application windows, you can also share a whiteboard and an iPhone/iPad in Zoom.
Let’s take a look at the Advanced tab:
Advanced Tab
The Advanced tab provides more share screen options and these options are listed below:
a. Slides / PowerPoint as Virtual Background – This allows you to utilize a slideshow presentation as your virtual background, providing a more immersive presentation.
b. Portion of Screen – When this is selected, you get to share a portion of your screen by using a resizable rectangular window.
c. Computer Audio – This allows you to share your computer’s audio without sharing your screen.
d. Video – This allows you to share videos that are saved on your computer.
e. Content from 2nd Camera – This option lets you share a secondary camera connected to your computer; for example, a document camera or the integrated camera on your laptop.
Lastly, let’s check the Files tab:
Files Tab
The Files tab allows you to share your saved files from third-party sharing services like Dropbox, OneDrive and others.
You can always visit Zoom’s support page if you wish to know more about Zoom’s share screen option.
To stop sharing your screen, just select Stop Share.
b. Creating A Virtual Background
Having a virtual background makes the online class experience more fun and different from the typical video conferencing that we know. The good thing is, this option is available within Zoom.
Here’s how you can set up your Doodly video as your background:
1. From Zoom’s main screen, select Settings.
2. Settings menu will pop up. Select background and filters. At the bottom of your screen, you will see the different virtual backgrounds available including the ones you have already imported. On the right side, you will see a plus “+” sign.
3. Click the plus sign. After clicking it, you will see 2 options: Add Image and Add Video. Choosing add video will let you select videos saved on your desktop. Locate your Doodly video and set it as your background.
If you don’t have the option to add a video, or if you’re unable to enable the virtual background option, especially the video background, it is likely that your system is not compatible. You can check the system requirements here.
