So you want to overlay video with hand-drawn animation … awesome idea! We love this video effect, because it’s such an attention-grabber. Plus, since animation mixed with traditional video isn’t something you see every day, it adds that special “wow” factor to your videos.
And fortunately, this technique is super-easy to do using Doodly whiteboard animation software and a third-party video editor.
In this blog post, we’ll show you exactly how to overlay video with hand-drawn animation in our video tutorial.
Or, if you’d rather read the instructions, you have that option as well. Right below the video, we’ve also provided step-by-step directions with screenshots.
So, let’s get right to it!
In this video tutorial, master Doodler Pamela Dimmick shows you how to overlay film with animation, using Doodly and video editing software.
If you’d prefer to follow the written steps, they’re listed below.
Naturally, you’ll need to have a hand-drawn animation video to implement this effect. Doodly to the rescue! Doodly is whiteboard animation software that lets you create whiteboard animation videos in minutes–with zero tech or design experience.
With Doodly, you’ll begin by making the background of your video a bright lime green shade.
You can easily do that by downloading this green rectangle we created, then uploading it to your Doodly image library.
Why bright lime green? Because this color is rarely seen in video–for instance, it’s not found in nature, and unless you intend to pay homage to the 80s, you’re unlikely to find people wearing this shade.
That’s important, because we’re going to use a color replacement technique called chroma key. With chroma key, our video editor will find the bright green parts of our video and remove them.
Once you’ve dragged and dropped the green rectangle into the background of your Doodly video, you’ll then want to move your video assets on top of that background, just like we did below:
After you’re done making your Doodly video just the way you want it, it’s time to export it.
So, choose whatever file resolution you intend to use in your final video (i.e. 1080p), then click the Continue button to start the export process.
Your next step is to open your third-party video editing software and create a new project.
Using Final Cut Pro, we did this by selecting File=>New=>Project which opened up the following dialogue box:
We named our project, then selected the OK button.
Now you’ll want to import your film footage (i.e. your non-Doodly video) into the new project you just created.
In Final Cut Pro, we did that by selecting File=>Import Media before navigating to our video, then clicking the Import Selected button.
Once you’ve imported your film, you’ll want to drag it down to the timeline, so you can edit it.
Your next step is to import your Doodly video following the same process you just performed. So, select File=>Import Media again, navigate to your Doodly video, then click the Import Selected button.
After importing your Doodly video into your project, drag and drop that video to the timeline. However, when doing so, make sure you place your Doodly video on top of the live-action video, just like we did below:
The next thing you want to do is remove the green from your Doodly video. Fortunately, it’s easy.
To do this in Final Cut Pro, we first clicked on the Effects browser:
Then, we selected Keying from the list of effects.
Doing that opened up the Keying menu. From that menu, we chose the Keyer option.
In the last step, you selected the Keyer … now you’re going to drag and drop the Keyer right onto your Doodly video in the timeline, just like we did below:
As you can see, once we moved the Keyer onto our Doodly video, all of the green in our video automatically disappeared.
However, we still have a problem. Our thought bubble is covering the cat’s face! Fortunately, that’s easily remedied in the next step.
To resize the Doodly video, just click on it in the timeline, then select the Transform tool, which is located in the lower left corner of this screenshot.
This tool will not only allow you to resize your Doodly video, but to also move it around, as you can see in the screenshot below.
To see the final effect, take a look at the video we created using this process:
As you can see, not only is it super-easy to overlay a video with hand-drawn animation, but the end result is really cool.
