The term “onboarding” refers to the process of introducing a newly hired employee into a company. Unlike new employee orientation, which is typically a one-day event, the onboarding process usually begins with an organization’s first contact with a new hire. It continues throughout the employee’s first year on the job. In the case of a new app user, we use the term “app onboarding.” App onboarding is the process of introducing a user to a new mobile app bringing them up to speed with how the new app works. In today’s article, we will show you how to create a simple onboarding video for new employees.
An onboarding process includes an introduction of the new hire to their coworkers, providing company handbooks, showing the assigned work area, and instructing them on their roles and responsibilities in the workplace. It usually includes an orientation program that generally lasts for several days. The goal is to help employees get started on the job and ensure they have a good understanding of how things are done at your company so that they can do their jobs well.
With so many interviews taking place via Zoom these days, it’s not a bad idea to create a mini onboarding video to help your new hires get a head start before their first day, and Doodly is ideal for this. Let’s take a quick look at what our onboarding video includes.
The first scene is the title screen, where we placed the title and the welcome greetings for the new hires. Here you can include your company logo and upload an actual image of your office as your background. In our sample video, if you noticed, our Doodly character is colored. That is because we have Doodly’s rainbow add-on enabled, but you can always use the standard black and white assets if you want. If you wish to use your own characters or images, you have the option to upload and use them in Doodly.
The next scene includes the forms that the new employees need to download. As we all know, onboarding entails the completion, signature, and reading of various paperwork. We used arrows to point the locations of the download buttons for new hires. If you want to do something similar, you’ll need to embed your video on a web page then place the links in the text just below the video.
Clickable links within the video are supported by some video players, such as Voomly. If you’re using one of those video players, simply add the link when you’re setting up the exported video. When new employees watch the video, they can click the link to download the files when prompted.
We also have a list of tasks for new employees to complete on their first day. The actual tasks may vary depending on your company. You can choose to only include urgent tasks in this section.
We included some first-day tips, such as where to park, for the employees. This tip is especially useful for new employees who have never been to the office building before. Imagine the hassle of finding a parking space on your first day to work. This information will at least give your new employees peace of mind, knowing where to go and park when they arrive at the building.
And then finally, we have our closing scene where new employees are directed to check out the portal, acme.com. We have also included contact details that they can immediately call if they have concerns or questions.
You’ll see that it’s a short video, about one minute long, and it can be a little less when we make all the timing adjustments. This video here is a great start. Remember that we don’t want to overwhelm the person, but instead, we want to put them at ease by providing them with some helpful information to make their first day less stressful. We want to include the most basic and important information they need. Of course, the onboarding process requires a lot of tasks, but with the explainer video, we’re helping them out take the first step.
We listed down below other details that you may want to include in your video:
You can upload these images in Doodly and include them in your onboarding video.
If you are an app or software developer, you can create something similar to onboard new users of your software or app. You can talk about the installation process, its features, or how to navigate it.
How did we create the onboarding video using Doodly? Well, here’s how we did it.
Doodly is an easy drag-and-drop whiteboard video creation software. The process of creating the onboarding video is pretty straightforward. Here are some things to take note of:
You can choose from the props available or import your own and use them. If you want to use Doodly’s props, you can enter keywords like “background” or “wall” to choose your background image. Once you find the perfect background for your video, double-click it and expand the image so it can occupy the entire screen.
After you have set up your background, we then adjust its opacity. We do this to draw attention to our main characters and texts. You can change your background’s opacity by selecting it and clicking the gear icon. This will open the asset settings. Adjust the opacity by lowering it to as low as 30% or whatever opacity level works best for your first scene.
After adding the background image, you can start placing your main characters, props (if you need them), and texts. As we have mentioned, you can always use imported images if you want to.
In Doodly, there are characters with different gestures. For our sample video, we used the character named Mercy. If you search her in Doodly, you will see that she has different gestures and roles. That means you can use the same character with different outfits and gestures in every scene. Of course, we would only choose a character related to our theme. Since we started with Mercy wearing business attire, we can select the same character on a business outfit but different clothing color or style.
Doodly comes with tons of pre-installed fonts. You can choose from the available options when working on your videos. If you have a specific font in mind or wish to upload your own, you can do so. You can check out Google font for more font options.
Here’s what our first scene looked like with the background scene’s opacity adjusted, texts and characters added.
You can also add an audio track or background music to your onboarding video. Your timeline is at the bottom portion of your Doodly’s Edit Video Page. This is where you will find your scenes and audio tracks. Doodly has tons of royalty-free sound effects and music tracks that you can choose from. To add background music, choose from the options under the Sounds tab and drag it to the timeline.
The voice-over menu is the bottom menu in the timeline. If you wish to add a voice-over in your video, click the plus sign (+) beside the mic and volume icon within the timeline. Press the mic icon when you see it to record your voice.
We hope that this article inspired you to use Doodly to create onboarding videos. Until next time.
