By adding pictures to your videos, you can make your videos more personable, engaging, and meaningful. And there are plenty of great reasons you might want to do that.
For instance, you can add pictures to videos when you want to personalize a holiday eCard, create a surprise for a romantic partner, or liven up a video invite.
You can even use photos in your business-related videos to introduce your team members, display pictures of your office, or highlight products you sell.
No matter what your reason for creating a video with pictures, the end result is sure to be appealing and memorable.
Even better, regardless of your tech skills, adding pictures to your videos is easy. And in this guide, we’ll give you step-by-step instructions that show you two different ways to do it, so you can give your videos way more pizzazz!
We’ll highlight the different options you have for creating a video with pictures in a minute, but first …
If you don’t already have Doodly, you’ll need it for this tutorial. Doodly is whiteboard animation software that allows you to create professional whiteboard videos in minutes–even if you have zero tech or design skills.
These doodle videos–which feature a hand drawing on a whiteboard–are proven to be 20X more engaging than traditional videos … which is why Doodly’s perfect for creating memorable videos for both personal use, as well as professional.
And that’s especially the case when you incorporate your favorite pics and photos into those whiteboard videos! So, if you’re ready to create fun and engaging doodle videos using pictures, get your copy of Doodly today.
With Doodly, you’ll find that there are two different ways you can create a video with pictures:
1. Using a Doodly Video Template
If you’re new to Doodly, you’ll love all the video templates the software contains! These video templates consist of a professional doodle video–complete with images, background music, and a written voiceover script.
With a Doodly video template, all you need to do is make a few edits and within minutes, you’ll have a full-fledged, custom video with pictures that you can put online–right away!
With dozens of templates to choose from, you’ll have no problem finding one that expresses your message perfectly.
2. Creating a Video from Scratch
Don’t want to use a template to create your video? No problem! Doodly’s so intuitive and user-friendly that even if you’ve never used the software before, you can create a video with pictures quickly.
Regardless of whether you create your video from scratch or using a template, adding pictures and photos to your Doodly videos is always easy … and in this blog post, we’ll show you both ways.
By the time you get to the end of it, you’ll be an expert at creating whiteboard videos with pictures!
In this example, we’ll begin by showing you how to add photos to one of Doodly’s video templates.
There are only 6 short steps to creating your video using a video template. Let’s dive right in …
1. Select a Video Template
To create your video, you’ll first want to log into Doodly. Once you do, you’ll be presented with the following screen:
You’ll notice that there are lots of video templates you can choose from–20 with a Doodly Standard membership and 40, if you have a Doodly Enterprise membership.
To get started, you’ll want to first select the template you want to use. In this example, we selected the video template, Real Estate – New Listing, from the Templates tab.
As you might imagine, this video template helps real estate agents quickly create promotional videos for their listings.
After you select your template, you’ll want to name your project, then click the Create button:
2. Upload Your Photos
Once you’ve opened your Doodly workspace, you can start editing your video template. And, as you can see in the screenprint below, this video template has placeholders to indicate where your pictures should go:
To add those pictures, you’ll first want to select the Props tab within the Doodly library. Then, just click on the blue Plus button in the lower left corner to add a new prop. This will open up the following dialogue box:
From this dialogue box, navigate to the location of the photos you want to add, then select the Open button.
Your images will now be available from the Props tab within the Doodly library where they can be used in this video, as well as any future videos you create.
3. Drag & Resize Your Pictures
Now that you have your images in the library, it’s time to add them to your video. Fortunately, Doodly makes this a piece of cake!
Simply drag-and-drop your pictures into the appropriate image placeholders, just like we’ve done below:
Then, resize your images so they fit correctly into the template:
Naturally you’ll want to follow this process for each image placeholder in your video template.
4. Edit the Text
Of course, you’ll also want to edit the text in your video, so it accurately reflects the specifics of your brand. To do this, just click on any text you want to change, then enter the correct information.
For instance, in the screenprint below, we clicked on the price to change the value from $xxx, xxx to $649,999.
5. Preview
After you’ve customized your video just the way you want it, it’s time to see how it looks. To preview your video, simply click on the Preview button in the upper right corner of your screen.
6. Export
Once you’re satisfied with the way your video looks, it’s time to export it. Fortunately, Doodly gives you lots of export options, allowing you to choose the resolution, quality, and file type of your video.
To export your Doodly video, just click on the gray Export button in the upper-right corner of your screen:
Clicking on the Export button will open up a dialogue box where you can select your desired video resolution, quality, and file type:
From that dialogue box, just select the settings you want to use, then click the Continue button to export your video.
And there you have it! That’s how to use a Doodly video template to easily add pictures to any video you want to create.

Now that you know how to modify a Doodly template, let’s take a look at the other method you can use to create a video with pictures …
Even without using a Doodly video template, it’s easy to create a Doodly video with pictures.
To show you how to do it, we’ve created a fun holiday video for this example. And, rather than using a photo, we used a picture we found on the Internet, so you can see the full range of Doodly’s capabilities.
In the video below, master Doodler Pamela Dimmick, illustrates exactly how to create a video with pictures, check it out:

Prefer following written directions to watching video? No problem! Here are the step-by-step instructions, showing you the same video creation technique that’s taught in the tutorial …
1. Create New Video
To get started, you’ll want to begin by logging into Doodly. Once you do, click on the Create New Video button in the top left corner of your screen:
Clicking on the Create New Video option will open a dialogue box, as you can see in the screenprint below. From that box, just choose the whiteboard video style you want to use and name your project, then click the Create button.
As you can see, creating a new project opens up the workspace for your video:
2. Upload Your Pictures
Although Doodly has a massive image library, there may be times when you want to upload your own pictures. Fortunately, the process for doing that is simple.
To begin, click on the Props tab in the upper left corner of your screen:
After you’ve selected the Props tab, click on the blue Plus button to add a prop:
Once you do, you can select the location of the image you want to upload:
Just navigate to your file, then click the Open button:
As you can see, this automatically adds your uploaded image to your Doodly video.
3. Select Your Reveal Mode
Doodly offers two different ways you can reveal an on-screen object–either the hand can draw it, or you have the option of allowing a fade effect to slowly reveal the entire image (no hand). The default is the Draw reveal mode.
If you’re interested in viewing the difference between these two effects, go to the 24-second mark of the video tutorial where Pamela illustrates Doodly’s two reveal modes.
For this example, we don’t want the shamrock image to be drawn by the hand. Instead, we want our shamrock to slowly fade onto the screen.
To choose the fade effect for an image, simply select the Edit icon:
Doing so will open up a Live Preview, showing you exactly how that image will appear on screen in your video. It’ll also give you the option to change your image’s reveal mode.
As you can see, we changed the reveal mode for our shamrock by selecting Fade from the Reveal Mode drop-down menu:
4. Add Assets from the Doodly Library
You always have the option of adding assets from the Doodly library to make your videos even more engaging. The library literally contains thousands of characters, props, backgrounds, and scenes to choose from, so you have a ton of great options here.
For instance, in the screenprint below, we took this male character from the Doodly library and then dragged and dropped him right into our video:
5. Preview
Naturally, you’ll want to see how your video looks before exporting it. To do that, just click on the Export button in the upper right corner of your video:
6. Export
Once you’re satisfied with how everything looks, it’s time to export your video. You can do that by simply clicking on the Export button in the upper right corner of your screen:
And that’s all there is to creating a short video with pictures using Doodly!
Click the play button below to see the St. Patrick’s Day video we created for this example:

As you can see, adding pictures to your videos is a great way to personalize them–while also making your videos more interesting, engaging, and fun to watch.
Fortunately, whether you want to create videos with real-life photos or other kinds of graphics, Doodly makes it easy by giving you two options–to create a video from scratch or to edit one of Doodly’s many video templates.
Regardless of which method you choose, the process is simple.
