Facebook is a powerful tool when it comes to advertising. Ads, if done right, can be super profitable when posted on Facebook. Doodly supports video formats that perfectly fit your social media video upload needs. In this blog, we will look at how we can create videos that perfectly fit Facebook. We will also have a quick rundown on the different Facebook ad types and their video sizes. Plus, we will look at the basic steps on how to boost an FB post.
There are different types of video ads that we see on almost every social media site. Facebook, supports certain video ad formats and we have listed them below.
An in-streamad is a short ad that plays before, during, or after a video that you’re watching.
Say you’re watching a funny video and it pauses halfway through and shows you an advertisement, well that’s an in-stream video ad.
News Feed video ads appear in your news feed. When you’re scrolling through your Facebook news feed, checking out all of your friend’s posts and whatnot, and you see an advertisement, that’s a news feed ad.
News Feed ads are much more customizable compared to sponsored posts. It allows you to create campaigns around specific goals, such as increased website traffic, app installations, or lead generation.
Stories are those vertical ads that you see. They can either be full-screen images, video or carousel ads. You see them as you browse your FB stories. Unlike the personal Stories we upload on Facebook, Stories ads do not disappear after 24 hours. They are in a vertical format so your video size matters if you plan to do this type of ad.
Perhaps the easiest ad of all is the sponsored post. Facebook sponsored ads are paid publications launched from a Facebook Business Page. When you boost a post from your business page, it is shown to targeted audiences on different placements in order to get more views, reactions, likes, shares, and comments. Boosted posts are probably the easiest to create so consider starting here if you’re new to Facebook ads.
Horizontal, vertical, or square? With so many platforms and devices to use these days, choosing the right video size for your video can sometimes get confusing. Does video size matter? The answer is yes, especially if you are creating an ad. If we want more engagement with the audience, we then need to consider the video size that best fits a certain platform. To know the right video size to choose, you must know what video type you’re creating.
Here are the different sizes of video ads:
This is the most common video size used and it is also Doodly’s default video size.
This video format is used for the Stories feed on mobile devices. If you will use this format in Doodly, don’t forget to untick the “constrainaspect ratio” when selecting Custom resolution.
Lastly, we have the square video. The square video format is the preferred size for Facebook as well as other social media sites.
Video format, regardless of the content, plays an important role in making sure that people watch your video and keep them engaged. With billions of users of Facebook around the world, more than half of these are mobile-only users. As we all know, mobile phones especially smartphones are best navigated vertically. It is easier to view posts, swipe up, down, left, and right. Thus, square-size posts best fit social media platforms like Facebook. As we can see below, this format fills the screen much better than the traditional horizontal format.
Creating a square video in Doodly is very straightforward. Here’s how:
Start by clicking Create New Video and place a title to the video ad that you’re creating. After that, select Facebook and Instagram as your resolution and hit Create.
You will see that your blank scene is square and not the typical horizontal scene.
Begin adding assets to the blank canvas. Choose your characters, props and add some text to them. The recommended video ad duration is within 5 to 15 seconds so try to keep your video short but at the same time, captivating. If you want to use a different color for your background, you can always change it within Scene Settings.
Also, you can add your own image files to your Doodly video in case you can’t find a specific character or props from the preinstalled assets.
Exporting your square video is similar to how we normally export a typical horizontal video in Doodly. Simply select Export and hit Continue. If you wish to change the file location or filename, just click Change to update it.
Let’s take a look at our exported video:
As you can see, it’s a perfect square video which is what we need for our Facebook ad. Now we have a video to upload on Facebook. Since we want to reach as many people as we can to watch the ad, we then need to boost our post on Facebook.
FB boost is a great way to promote your posts especially if you have a business and wish to use social media to advertise. If you have tried online selling or online promotion, I’m sure you have heard or used FB boost. A Facebook boost is just like your regular posts on Facebook except that when you boost a post, you pay an amount of money to expand the reach of your post. Your posts appear higher in the News Feed to help more people see them. They may also appear on Instagram. Keep in mind that boosted posts must follow Facebook’s Advertising Policies for it to be approved.
Here’s how you boost a post on Facebook:
Select the posted ad from your Facebook business page. Locate the Boost post option at the bottom of your post and click it.
After clicking boost post, you will be prompted to fill in some info such as your audience details (location, age, gender), ad duration, budget, and payment method. The amount you need to pay varies depending on the number of people you want to reach.
Once you’re done setting up your post, hit the Boost post now at the bottom of your screen.
Note that the settings we listed are so far the most important details to fill in when trying to boost a post. You will see other details that can be set as you try to navigate your way through facebook’s boost option. You can play around with it, or check Facebook’s support page to know how to fill in the other details.
Though boosting a post seems hassle-free, not all posts can be boosted. Sometimes, the boost post option is not available. There are several reasons behind this issue. Facebook has listed all possible reasons on their Help Center why you can’t seem to boost your post. You can visit their page to know what action you need to take to help address this issue.
To engage the audience with your ads, one must know how to use social media wisely. When creating video ads, consider the platform you will use to post your ad. All types of social media platforms have certain video size requirements. Of course, you can upload any video size with the supported file format on any platform. But, we’re talking about the most reliable video size, proven to make your video more engaging and look good.
Square videos have been proven to be more effective with mobile phone users. Why is this important? Well, people of all ages these days are watching more videos on mobile and this is the best venue to advertise. Square video fills up more vertical space, while still taking up the same amount of horizontal space. Thus, Facebook recommends using it on their platform especially for ads.
