If you are applying for a job, an impressive resumé, college degree, work experience, and great photo are sometimes not enough to stand out. If you want to have an edge, you have to think of something that can help you promote yourself better. One way to step up your game is by creating a self introductory video.
Having your own video introduction immediately creates a personal connection. Let’s admit it, watching a video is way better than reading a pile of resumé. But talking about yourself is not an easy thing to do, even if it’s just for a video recording. There are people who are camera shy, others don’t like being recorded and some just don’t have time to prepare for it. Another thing, even if you can create a video, you can’t make it look professional if you don’t have the right equipment e.g. HD camera, noise-cancellation microphone, sound-proof area or location, etc.
Thanks to Doodly, you can create your introduction video without being actually in the video. Plus, it looks fun and out of the ordinary. The best part, you can choose your own character, set your own background, and be as creative as you can.
An AboutMe video is an introduction video of yourself. It helps customers or employers get to know you better. It gives them a glimpse of what you’d be like to work with. The most common use for these videos is to introduce yourself and provide information about what you do when submitting a job application. Apart from a job hunt, you can also use an introductory video to warm up your clients before having a meeting with them either over the phone or in person.
The first thing you want to think about when creating an about me video is the information that you’re going to include. The details of your information will depend on how you plan to use it. Are you planning to use it to promote yourself or to promote your business? Let’s look at the list of information that we can add in an introductory video.
When creating your own self introductory video, the following details should be included:
Provide a brief background about yourself. You can start by introducing your name, your title, and give a brief description of what you do. You don’t have to be too technical about it. It is best to explain it as simple as you can. We don’t want a very long spiel with too much jargon in your video. We want a video that is relatable, brief yet concise, and comprehensive. If you are a business founder, you can offer a brief background about why you founded your business. You can indicate its core values, mission, and so forth.
Provide problems or challenges in your previous work which you were able to solve. What services do you specialize in? What is your strength? Give them a reason to hire you. Highlight your skills. It is best to back up your skills with real-life experiences that showcase these skills.
Lastly, we want clients to take action after watching the introductory video. Include a call to action such as a link where people can find out more about you or contact you. You might also want to include your social media links like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.
We conceptualized an About Me video using the table form below. On the left side, we placed all the scenes we want to add to our presentation. It includes characters and props. You can even place here your preferred font for your text, and other tiny details. On the opposite side, we added the script for the voiceover.
It is very helpful to have a draft prior to creating a video in Doodly. You can properly plan your scenes, change characters or script, revise it easily without the need to redo your entire video. Once you’re fully satisfied with the flow of your scenes and script, you can then proceed in creating your video in Doodly.
So now let’s implement our video flow. We start by gathering the preferred assets for the scenes. We added a background room from the preset assets under the Props tab and set its opacity to 50%. Applying opacity helps highlight the text or information we have on a scene. Under the Characters tab, we chose the character of Agatha for all 4 scenes. For each scene, you will see Agatha posing with different gestures.
Note: When selecting a character, it is important that you have located first all your preferred gestures for that one particular character before choosing it. The reason behind that is because not all preset characters have multiple gestures. Some characters may not have the rest of the gestures you need so you have to check them first because this might affect your entire concept.
The video that we are creating is just a sample introductory video for LinkedIn. We are not applying for jobs, we are merely just providing a high-level overview of what Amanda Jones does so it is pretty short but effective.
For scene 1, Amanda Jones is being represented by a professional-looking Agatha. You will see her standing holding a laptop, wearing business attire in an office. The title of the video is shown in the first scene which is About Me. This tells you immediately that this is a self-introduction video. You will see Amanda’s name displayed together with her current role.
Her voiceover includes her name and her work title too. If you noticed how she explain her work on her voiceover, it is in layman’s term, not technical at all. That being said, even if you don’t have a background on her field, you will not tag her profile as irrelevant. In fact, she makes her work sound intriguing and interesting at the same time.
For scene 2, you will see Agatha facing front and this time, she’s holding a folder. Behind her is a huge desktop with different e-commerce symbols. On her voiceover, she provided a more detailed description of what she does. She started with, “What does that mean for you?”, which immediately addressed the simple work description she had on the first scene. She also used a tag line on her video, “Concept to Reality” which gives a great name recall. It is a genius technique.
On scene 3, you will see Agatha with a hand gesture showing her business name. The character used actually has a whole body, but we extended it and zoom it in to only capture the upper body of Agatha. This gives a great impact on the scene helping the audience focus on what she is trying to show which is the name of her business. We also made the year when she founded the company (2006) appear bigger than the company name to highlight her length of experience on her field. Her voiceover also included her company’s mission.
The last scene is where the call to action (CTA) is placed. Of course, after you impress your audience with your credentials, we want them to take action by contacting you. You will see Agatha’s character again from the first scene but this time, she is standing beside the contact details. If you want to put your email address or other social media handles, you can definitely do so. Her voiceover sounds proactive, friendly, and interested to connect, which is great.
Okay, so we have completed our scenes walkthrough. This time, let’s look at the process of recording our voiceover for our About Me video.
As soon as we’re done adding all assets to our first scene, we start recording the voiceover. Yes, we don’t need to create all scenes before we do the voiceover. We can do our recording one scene at a time. To do that, let’s locate the record option within the timeline and hit the plus (+) sign.
As soon as you click the plus sign, you will be prompted with a red mic icon with time showing as 00:00. Hit the red mic icon and start recording your script.
Remove any extra space or dead air at the start of your recording.
You can do this by hovering your cursor at the beginning of the voiceover, wait for the double-sided arrow to appear, then hold and drag your cursor to the right.
If you noticed, we left a tiny bit of space and didn’t trim it all the way to the very start of the voiceover. This is done in order to fully capture the beginning of the voiceover. It wouldn’t sound nice to have a presentation that immediately starts talking right after you hit the play button. Leaving a short pause is ideal to also give your audience time to settle their eye on the presentation.
Your voiceover should match the timing of your scene. If this is not the case, we then need to adjust it so your scene can end together with the voiceover. You can either change the animation duration of each asset in your scene or limit the scene’s time at the end. It doesn’t have to end at the exact time but it should be close enough.
Now let’s take a look at some other menus within Doodly that can be updated when working on a video but are sometimes overlooked.
Adjusting the timing of your scene and your audio tracks are made easy with Doodly’s extra time at the endsettings. By default, each scene is set to end at .05 seconds. If your voiceover on a scene is quite long, .05 seconds may not be enough to fully capture everything. To address that, we need to extend the “extra time at the end” menu. You can see this menu from the Scene Settings.
You can also adjust this setting prior to recording your voiceover especially if the script of your scene is quite long.
Another menu from the scene settings which you might want to update is the exit animation. This is your scene’s transition style. In most cases, it is best to set the animation to “X” or none. This gives a clean transition per scene.
If you plan to add a background music to your About Me video, do not forget to adjust the volume. Your background music should not overpower your voiceover. Setting the volume of your background music to at least 6% – 12% is acceptable to the ear. Now if you don’t have a voiceover in your video, you can leave your music track at 100% or reduce the volume, it’s totally up to you.
Having an About Me video helps build a bond instantly with either your future employer or your co-workers (if you are a new employee). It is a way to build rapport. Telling people why you do what you do in your video makes people trust you more knowing that you have commitment and passion towards work.
Creating an About Me video using Doodly is easy and fun. We hope this blog inspires you to start creating your own self introduction video. Until next time. 🙂
