Doodly lets us create videos to explain certain concepts in whatever niche we are in. We use it to create short ads and other things that require explainer videos. Another way to use Doodly is by creating a thank-you message intended for customers. If your niche is marketing and you already have a system, like marketing automation, you can include a thank you message as part of your sales funnel. In today’s blog, we’re going to walk you through the process of creating a thank you video for your customers.
So when is the best time to use Doodly to create a thank-you video? One example is right after your customer has made a purchase. For instance, if a customer downloads your app, you can send them a thank-you message right after. But, instead of just saying thank you, you could include a short walkthrough video to assist your customers in getting started with their newly downloaded app. Doodly is perfect for this scenario because you can use Doodly’s hand to represent the various taps and swipes your customers will make while using your app. You could also include your contact information in your video. This will help customers quickly get in touch with you if they have questions or need customer support. Or, you can make a short video to show off the main features of your app.
To start creating a thank-you message in Doodly, we can either work on the scenes first or record the voice-over first. Whichever approach you take is okay, but for today’s walkthrough, we will begin by recording the voice-over. Let’s get started.
The first step in creating your video is to choose a board style and a resolution. Let’s select “whiteboard” as our board style, and the video resolution should be 1080p.
After you hit Create, you will be routed to the Edit Video page. You will see your first scene on this screen, which is blank. Since we will work on our voice-over first, we will immediately proceed to the timeline at the bottom of the screen.
Click the “+” sign beside the microphone and volume icon. This will reveal the red mic with a timer set to 00:00. Click the red mic to start recording.
For a clearer recording, use an external mic like a microphone condenser with a noise reduction feature.
We now have created our voice-over for our first scene. Next is to place some characters, props, and texts.
The first thing we need to do with our first scene is to add all the props we need. Since our given scenario is about downloading a phone app, we will look for an image of a mobile phone.
Go to the Props tab from the asset’s panel and type in “phone” to search for a phone image. We found an image of a hand holding a phone, which is perfect for the video we’re creating. We also added a picture of a lady carrying groceries.
If you have a brand logo or you wish to add your app’s interface, you can take a snapshot of it and upload it to Doodly. After that, you can place it inside the cellphone props.
The next step is to add text. For our sample video, we used the font style Akrobat-Semibold. If you can’t find this in your Doodly texts list, you can always download and search for it at Google Fonts. Or, you can also use a different font style. There are tons of great fonts to choose from, so once you find the perfect font for your video, feel free to import it to Doodly.
Arranging the layers in the correct order is essential. It helps make sure that none of the assets are covered by another. For our sample scenario, we want the text to come on the screen first, followed by the hand holding the phone, and lastly, the lady carrying the groceries.
The default animation duration is 3 seconds. Depending on how long you want each asset to be hand-drawn, you can always change the animation duration. Let’s change the animation duration of our video and set it to less than 3 seconds.
We are now done with our first scene. The next step is to create our second scene. To do that, click the “+” sign beside the first scene in the timeline.
In the second scene, we will add our new set of assets. We need a phone image, but this time let’s use a phone without a hand holding it.
Next is to turn off the exit animation. You can find this feature within the scene settings. The scene-setting is located on the right side of your screen, just above the layers menu.
After adding all the assets and turning off the exit animation, we can now duplicate the second scene.
In the third scene, we will have both texts inside the phone erased by setting their exit animation to ERASE for 0.5 seconds. To do this, select the text and click the gear icon that will appear right on top of the text. This will launch the asset settings.
We also need to set the animation duration for all of the assets in the third scene to zero.
After setting the exit animation and layers, we are now ready to duplicate the 3rd scene.
Delete the texts “name” and “password” in the fourth scene. We will replace both with a new set of texts.
Next is to add another image. Let’s locate a “pinned note” image from the Props tab. Make the first pinned note smaller and place it inside the mobile phone. Your first note should have no delay and no animation set.
After adding the first note, copy and paste it into your scene. We will place the duplicate on top of the first pinned note, but we will make the second note a little bigger than the first one. The delay of the second note is set to 0.2s, and the duration is set to 0s.
Keep duplicating the second pinned note, making every duplicated note a little bigger than the previous one. They should be arranged on top of each other, from smallest to biggest. This technique will create the illusion of a “pinned note” popping out of the phone when we play the video.
After adding the layers of pinned notes, we will add text on top of the last note, which is the largest among the duplicated images.
So we have finally completed all the scenes required for our thank-you message. The next step is to adjust the timing of each scene so that it plays in sync with our voice-over.
The key to fixing the sync issues is to update these two settings:
The default value under extra time at the end settings is 0.5 seconds. Note that this feature is applied per scene and not to the entire video. So whatever value you set for one scene doesn’t carry over to the rest of your scenes.
When you increase the time under extra time at the end of your first scene, the animation duration of your props and characters follows whatever is set under the layers panel (delays and duration). After all the assets have been drawn, the scene stays still as your voice-over plays. It only transitions to the next scene after the time you set for extra time at the end has lapsed. This gives you time to finish your spiel that is intended to be played for the first scene.
All assets do not have a delay applied to them when it is added to a scene. However, if you want to put a little interval between assets, you can do so by placing a time value under Delay within the Layers panel.
We set a value under “delay” within the Layers menu to add an interval between assets. What it does is, instead of continuously drawing one asset after the other, it pauses your image from being drawn by hand. It only resumes after the delay set has passed.
Now that our scenes and voice-over are finally in sync, it’s time to add the background music. Here are the steps:
When you make a video with a voice-over and background music, the music tends to overpower your voice. As a result, your message cannot be clearly understood. To prevent this from happening, we need to lower the volume of our music. You can do this by clicking the volume icon next to the music image in the timeline and setting it to less than 20%. You can always preview your video first to ensure that the volume of your track is not too loud and that your voice-over is clear.
We have finally completed our thank-you message. You can send this to your customers via email right after downloading your app. You can personalize it too to fit your needs. Add your logo, images, or even your own music track. Take a look at our finished video. Have fun doodling!
