Do you need to give directions to your event or location? Do you want to provide a visual representation of where your event is and what route people should take? If so, then this article might come in handy. In today’s blog, we will go over the process of presenting an event’s location in Doodly.
Creating a location route can be done using any map, but for today’s walkthrough, we will use the most common and most popular map, the Google Map.
Let’s say we are creating a short video for an event that will be held at a Convention Center. We need to show our expected guests the route they need to take to get to the Convention Center.
Let’s say our starting point is San Diego International Airport. We will start by mapping the address in Google Maps.
The first thing you need to do is log on to Google Maps and input the starting point and destination.
You can see in the map above that apart from the route, google map also displays the travel time and the distance it takes to move from the starting point towards the destination.
The arrival time varies depending on the traffic situation of the location. Another factor that impacts the arrival time is the mode of transportation you choose (i.e., car, train, walking, bike, or plane).
Make sure you remember where exactly the route is placed on the map. The route is the blue line connecting the starting point and the endpoint. It is important to remember the route because we will input them manually as we work on our video using Doodly. You also need to take note of the main highways near your location. On the map below we have interstate 8 (I-8) and interstate 5 (I-5) as nearby highways.
Once you are already familiar with the exact location of your route and highways, you can turn off the route lines. You can skip this step if you want to but for the Doodly video that we are creating, we will take it off our map.
Apart from the route lines, we want to make sure that the map is clear from all the cluttered symbols and labels. To do that, we need to click Layers at the bottom left side of the page, click More, and untick Labels. This should provide a simple look which is what we are aiming to have with our Doodly map.
Keep your map at the center. When you are happy with the position of your map, take a snapshot of it. Make sure you capture the full route from starting point to destination.
Your screenshot should look like this:
Save the screenshot on your computer. Once the image is saved, it’s now time to import the map into Doodly.
1. From Doodly’s Props tab, click the plus sign “+” to import the map.
2. Depending on the style you want, you can either set borders for your map or stretch it to fully cover your scene.
3. The next step is to add a label to it. We need to add both the starting point and destination to the map including the two main interstate highways. Use the underscore or dash to create a path to show the route that your guests will take from the airport to the convention center.
4. When you got everything plotted, plan how you want each asset to appear on your scene. Some of the things you can do are the following:
These are just some of the things that you can do to customize your video. You can always add more effects to it if you want to. Now that we are done working on our map, let’s take a look at the exported presentation:
Now remember, you can always decide what you want to include on your map. You can keep the route, and the labels, it’s all up to you. Some may just want the map layout simple but you control the creativity with your Doodly presentation. You can customize it however you like and that’s the beauty of Doodly.
We hope this blog gave you a new take on how to present map locations in Doodly. Until next time. 🙂
