Most videos that we create in Doodly are short video ads promoting certain products or services. It can be helpful to add a watermark on each video created, but what exactly is a watermark?
There are two types of watermarks: visible and invisible watermarks.
A visible watermark is a design created during the wet-paper phase of papermaking. It was first introduced in Italy, in 1282. Before, we can only see watermarks on papers usually applied using a stamp. Then with the computer age, watermarks were used on documents, images, and videos online. A watermark is a visible embedded overlay that can either be a text or a logo. They are often transparent or very light to make sure they don’t cover your work. It aims to protect copyright. Apart from protecting your work, it is also used as a subtle way of branding.
We also have digital watermarking which is also called fingerprinting and this is our invisible watermark. This allows music composers, photographers, and video creators to upload their work online and find all illegal copies of their work and take appropriate legal action. This is because digital watermarking allows copyright owners to incorporate codes which are identifying information invisible to the human eye.
Today, we are going to focus on creating a visible watermark for our Doodly videos.
The main purpose of adding a watermark is to identify your work and discourage others from using it without your consent, or at worst, claim it as their own work. Though adding a watermark will not stop people from using your video, it at least makes it hard for them to claim they own it. Apart from serving as a copyright disclaimer, it also helps with brand awareness. You get to promote your brand without really telling people about it. Lastly, it makes sure that your clients don’t run off with your video before paying you the final bill. These are just a few of the many reasons why we add a watermark.
You can add any kind of watermark to your video. Even an image can be used as a watermark. Below are the most commonly used watermarks on either, video, image, or document:
Have you tried adding a watermark in one of your Doodly videos? If yes, well you’re probably one of the many who added their logo and placed their watermark one at a time on every scene. While this method works, there is a better way of doing it and that is by using a custom background. Placing your watermark in a custom background gives you a more steady and uniform watermark all throughout your video.
Here is the step by step process on how you can create your custom background:
Use graphic design software or a photo editor to create your custom background. When choosing software to create your background, we need to consider 2 things:
a. The software should have a 1920 x 1080 template. If not, it should at least let you customize your template size or aspect ratio to 1920 x 1080 pixels.
b. It should allow you to adjust the opacity of your imported image or added text.
There are several graphic design software that you can use to create your custom background. You can use a web-based program or software to install. Below are just a few but you can always try other software apart from what we have included here. You may already have one installed on your laptop so you can check your apps first prior to installing anything.
Pixelmator pro (Mac OS)
Canva (Mac and Windows)
Design Wizard (Mac and Windows)
For our sample walkthrough, we used pixlr.com/e which is a web-based design maker. We start by clicking Create new.
Choose the template 1920 x 1080 px from the recommended size. If it is not available, you can input the size on the width and height field provided. Hit Create after.
We add a rectangle shape to fill in the blank space. This step may not be necessary for other graphic design software as their blank template is already a white blank canvas.
Import your logo or directly paste it (CTRL + V) on the white rectangle screen. Some graphic design software only allows the import option. Others would require you to purchase their software prior to importing your own logo.
Reduce the opacity of your logo. For our sample, we set the opacity to 30%.
Lastly, export your finished customer background with watermarks and save it on your computer.
Watermarks are usually placed at the bottom right side of a video. You can also set a bigger logo positioned at the center of your whiteboard as your watermark.
Apart from importing your own logo, you can also use text as your watermark. This is commonly seen when tagging work as draft or confidential. Most of the time they are placed across the page or screen diagonally.
With the text watermark we used, the opacity is set to 20%. You can always lower down or increase your watermark’s transparency depending on your preference.
If you don’t have time to create your watermark custom background, you can always hire someone to do it for you. You can check out websites like Fiverr as well as other freelancing job sites then post an ad there.

Now that we have our custom background with watermark, it’s time to use it in Doodly, and here’s how:
1. Open Doodly and go to Video Settings.
2. Under Background Style, select Custom.
3. Choose Custom Image and hit Browse file to locate the custom background you created.
4. Adjust the custom background by resizing it so you can properly position it in your scene. When you’re ready to save it, hit Done.
If you notice, the watermark is available to every new scene we add. It stays in the same location all throughout your video. When you preview it and add a scene transition you’ll notice that it stays fixed. It doesn’t swipe away with every transition. It’s a constant presence in your video.
Say your client has paid you and you now need to remove the watermark on your video. Simply change your background to white.
1. Go back to Video Settings.
2. Choose Whiteboard as the Background Style and hit Apply. This will get rid of the watermark but won’t mess up your video. All the assets in your scenes won’t be moved.
And that’s it! We have learned how to add and remove our custom background with watermark on Doodly.
The use of a watermark is at the discretion of the video creator. It is not mandatory but it helps protect your work from unauthorized use. It also helps with your branding. In Doodly, adding a watermark is so simple and easy. While you can directly create your watermark in Doodly per scene, the best way to do this is by creating your own custom background. Removing your watermark is hassle-free too when it is done using a custom background. If you think your Doodly videos will benefit from having a watermark, go on and give it a try. Apply a watermark to your video. 🙂
