Animation is a great way to engage your audience, so your viewers remain glued to the on-screen action. However, if you’ve never done it before, the process may seem intimidating.
Fear not, grasshopper! We’ve got you covered. In this blog post, we’ve created a video tutorial that’ll show you exactly how to animate your videos.
And for those of you who would rather read than sit through a video, no worries. We’ve also provided step-by-step written instructions, including screenshots.
So, regardless of your preferred learning style, by the time you’ve reached the end of this blog post, you’ll be able to (easily!) add animation directly to your videos.
First up is our video tutorial … in it, master Doodler Pamela Dimmick will show you a few different ways you can animate your videos.

If you’d rather just read how to add animation to your videos, you’ll find our step-by-step instructions with screenprints below …
We used Doodly to create the animation effect we teach in this tutorial. For the uninitiated, Doodly is whiteboard animation software that allows anyone to create realistic, professional whiteboard videos in minutes–even if they have zero tech or design skills.
These whiteboard videos have been proven to be 20X more engaging than standard videos. And when you add animation into the mix, that’s probably doubly so!
To grab your copy of Doodly, just click on the button below:
Once you have Doodly open, you’ll want to click on “Create New Video” in the upper left corner:
That’ll open the dialogue box shown below. Simply choose the settings you want to use, title your video, then click the Create button.
After you’ve opened your video workspace, you’ll want to add images, text, and audio to the video you’re creating. Fortunately, Doodly’s massive library of music tracks, fonts, and graphics makes this step easy.
For instance, with a Doodly Standard membership, you’ll get 2,784 custom images to choose from. By contrast, with a Doodly Enterprise membership, you’ll get more than 2X that–a whopping total of 7,300 images in your image library … and that number is constantly growing.
To create your video, simply browse through Doodly’s library to find the characters, props, music, and background you want to use.
Alternatively, you always have the option of importing your own images into the Doodly software.
Regardless of whether the images are your own or Doodly’s, the process of using them in your videos is the same either way.
Just select the images you like, then drag and drop them onto the canvas–just like we did below with this robot character.
In this simple animation demonstration, we want our robot character to burst onto the scene, growing larger as he moves from left to right across the screen.
To create this effect, we resized our robot, making him smaller, and we also moved him to the bottom left of the canvas. This is how he’ll appear when the animation begins.
Typically, whiteboard videos feature a hand drawing a scene as it comes to life. However, for this animation to render correctly, we don’t want to use the hand.
Likewise, we also want to keep the scene short in duration, so the robot’s movement is smooth, rather than jerky.
To accomplish this, you’ll want to change the Delay and Duration settings to zero seconds in the Layers menu along the right side of your screen:
You’ll also want to change your scene settings by clicking on the Scene Settings button. Doing so will open up the following dialogue box.
From this box, select the “X” from the Exit Animation menu. This ensures that the transitions between your video’s scenes will look right in the final animation.
Once you’ve changed the scene’s settings, you’re ready to duplicate the scene you just created. You can do this by going to the video timeline, right-clicking on the scene, and selecting Duplicate from the menu.
Each scene we’re creating in this example represents an animation frame. So, in our duplicated scene, we’re going to create the second frame of our animation.
To do this, we’ve moved our robot to the right and made him slightly larger. This will make him appear as if he’s growing as he moves across the screen.
We want to create several frames to show our robot getting bigger as he flies across the screen. To accomplish this, we duplicated our last scene, then resized our robot again and moved him further to the right.
Duplicate, resize … duplicate, resize. We’ll continue duplicating scenes, then resizing/moving our robot until we’ve created our final animation frame.
You can check this out for yourself in the screenshots of two of the scenes below, illustrating the robot’s progression.
You’ve now successfully animated your image. To get a sneak peek of how your final video will look, just click the Preview button in the upper right corner of your Doodly screen.
Once you’re confident that your animation looks the way you want it to, you’re ready to export your video. With Doodly, you can export your whiteboard video in various mp4 file sizes, from web-ready all the way to full 1080p HD.
Just click the Export button in Doodly before selecting your desired file type, resolution, and quality.
And there you have it! You now know how to create a video, featuring an animated object that moves across the screen, getting larger as it does.

Want more cool ways to use animation in your videos? Check out our video tutorial at the beginning of this blog post.
At the 24-second mark, Pamela explains how to use animation between scene transitions, and at 3:06 in the video, she’ll show you how to animate part of a character’s body–for instance, by wagging our robot’s antenna back and forth.
You now know how to animate a video, and as you can see, the process is incredibly simple. Even better, although animation is easy to create, it makes your videos that much more interesting.
And more interesting videos mean higher engagement rates … so if you’re thinking about adding animation to your videos, go for it.
It’s bound to make your videos that much more popular among your target audience!
