A great video editing software requires great features, functions, and effects. In today’s blog, we will look at one of the coolest features in Doodly. I’m talking about the pan and zoom fx.
If you have already used pan and zoom effects in your videos, I’m sure you will agree that this feature is a “must-have” when doing video editing tasks. But what exactly is pan and zoom effects? How does that work? Should you use it in your Doodly video? These are just some of the questions that we will try to answer in this blog.
Pan or panning is the movement of the camera between two assets horizontally similar to the motion of a person when they turn their head on their neck from left to right.
Zoom or zooming is when the camera is set on a certain part of the video, moving closer to do a close-up shot of the selected frame.
The ‘Pan and Zoom’ effect is located within the Edit Video screen’s timeline.
Setting up the Pan & Zoom settings would always depend on how you want to use them in your video presentation.
There is really no right pattern as to how you should use it but I will show you an example of a video scene with pan and zoom effects.
After that, you can explore it, try it on your videos and have fun with it.
Here’s a sample of a video without pan and zoom:
The video looks good already for an animated video but let’s see if we can improve it some more by adding pan and zoom effects to it.
So my plan is to start the video showing the entire screen, zoom in on the 1st box, pan on the 2nd box, and then zoom out to full screen once again.
Let’s see how we can achieve that.
Step 1 – From the timeline, click the + sign. This will create a small box on the timeline with “fx” and “x” on it.
Step 2 – Click “fx”. This will open the pan & zoom settings screen.
Step 3 – For this particular video, we want to keep how the video starts, so let’s keep the Start screen locked. On the right side where it says END, let’s capture the 1st box, and to do that, we will adjust the frame to focus on just that portion of the screen.
Step 4 – Click Show Preview to see pan and zoom in action. If the video didn’t capture the entire animation, you can go back to the timeline and adjust it. When you’re satisfied with your timing, hit Apply.
Step 5 – Now we’re ready to add the second pan & zoom action. Let’s leave a little space before the next pan & zoom effect is added so they don’t transition continuously. This will make the video pause before it presents the next captured scene. To do this, simply go to the pan and zoom timeline, decide where in the timeline you wish to put the interval. Once you are settled, do a right-click then select + Add panning & zooming.
Step 6 – For the last part of the scene, let’s have the camera capture the entire screen. We will again add another pan and zoom fx on the timeline but this time, let’s not add any interval. To do this, just click the plus sign right after the last added pan & zoom fx.
You can always adjust the timing of your pan and zoom effect by going back to the timeline and dragging the arrow that appears when you hover on the vertical line beside the x icon.
Here is the finished video with applied pan and zoom feature:
We hope you enjoy our pan and zoom feature for today’s blog. It is very easy to use and it’s a fun feature to discover. Should you use it in your next Doodly project? I definitely think you should! Go ahead and try it. It’s a great tool, it makes animated videos more presentable and stylish. Until next time!
