In our previous blog, we talked about Doodly’s basic features found within the timeline. These are the features pan & zoom, scenes, music, and voice-over settings. Today we will have a look at another awesome function which is also found on the Edit Video page. I’m talking about the Video Settings.
The video settings button is located right above the pan & zoom settings. It contains a separate menu with lots of great features which we will discuss as we move on.
Apart from Video Settings, there is another Settings found within the Edit Video page, and that is the Scene Settings. The difference between the Video Settings and the Scene Settings is that the video settings control the settings of the entire video whereas the scene settings are used on a scene-by-scene basis.
We have featured an overview of video settings in our previous blogs but this time we will look at it in a more detailed way.
The first column consists of Preview, Background Style, Subtitles and Doodly Rainbow.
The Preview displays your chosen background style. It also shows the default hand that is writing on the board. The hand can be changed at any point during your video editing process.
This is your board style. If you remember, right after you click Create New Video, it prompts you to set up a background. You don’t have to spend so much time trying to decide what background to use at the onset of video creation because just like the hand, this can also be changed at any given time through this menu.
There are 6 background style to choose from:
The Whiteboard is the default board style and is commonly used by many because it goes well with any characters or scenes.
The Dark Chalkboard and the Green Chalkboard give you the feeling of presenting in a classroom that is why it is commonly used by teachers when they are creating modules for their students.
The Glassboard is ideal for corporate functions, business presentations, sales pitches, etc.
And of course, if you have a company logo or you want to use a specific color theme, you can always use the Custom Color and Custom Image to do these things.
These are just feedback received from other Doodlers but there’s really no rule as to which board style to use for a certain presentation theme. Whatever works for you, whatever you feel using, if it compliments your presentation, just go for it!
Now, each board style has a corresponding hand style option and the number of hand styles depends on the board style that you choose. In the previous Doodly versions, we used to have fewer hand options for dark chalkboard, green chalkboard, and glassboard but if you look at the table below, we’re keeping up with the whiteboard’s hand style count. These numbers may change as we continuously update the software and of course, we love updates!
Also, if you noticed, the hands writing on the whiteboard as well as the glassboard are both holding a pen or marker while the hand writing on the black and green boards are both using chalk. With custom color and custom image boards, you have the option to choose whether you will use a marker or chalk in your presentation.
This menu allows you to either disable or enable the subtitles added on all scenes.
If you’re wondering where you can input your subtitles, well you can do that under Scene Settings. From there you can also enable or disable the subtitle but that works per scene only.
There are several locations within Doodly where you can enable or disable Doodly Rainbow and Video Settings is one of those locations. Doodly rainbow allows you to turn on and off the color in your assets, so you can switch from black and white to colored characters, props, and scenes.
The second column or the middle column of video settings is all about the hand style. As we have mentioned, the hand styles available depends on the type of board you have selected from the first column.
We have 4 hand style options:
For cartoon hand, you get to choose if you want to use a 2D or 3D hand
If using custom color or image, you can choose to use either a marker or a chalk
The third column or the final column of the video settings consists of the Title, Video ends when, Scene transition, Erase mode, and Resolution Settings.
The title of your video can be edited or changed in 3 different locations and video settings is one of them.
Here are the areas within Doodly where you can change your title:
1. My Videos page
This option allows you to decide when you would want your video to stop playing.
Video ends when both the animation and audio ends
You select this option when you wish to play the entire audio file even if your assets are already finished being drawn.
Likewise, if the animation is longer than the music, your presentation will display all your assets being drawn first even if there is no longer background music as it has already finished playing.
Video ends when animation ends
With this option, your audio file will automatically stop playing the moment all your assets are done being drawn even if the audio is not yet finished playing the entire track.
Scene transitions are animated-like effects that happen when your presentation is moving from one scene to another.
There are 7 Scene Transitions to choose from:
Swipe left is the default scene transition but you can always change it to any of the above transitions.
Erase mode is part of the Doodly animation apart from the handwriting or drawing assets that are placed in your presentation. When erase mode is enabled, it automatically adds an erase animation when an image is on top of another.
Please note that Erase Mode is only available to certain illustrators/hand styles. If you do not wish to have erase mode in your presentation, you can always turn it off by selecting “off” from erase mode dropdown options.
There are 4 options available for Erase Mode:
1. Smart mode
This is a combination of finger and eraser erasing the image. If it’s just a small corner that overlaps, then it is the finger that would erase the part. If the object overlapping is big enough, then an eraser will be used to erase the overlapping part.
2. With Finger
When this is selected, only the finger is seen erasing an overlapping image
3. With Eraser
When this is selected, only the eraser is seen erasing an overlapping image
4. Off
Selecting this option disables the erase mode so you will just see everything being drawn by hand
Just like the board style and the title, you also see the resolution option when you create a new video.
We have 6 resolution options to choose from:
When customizing resolution, as you adjust the width, the height is automatically adjusted too. If you wish to use a specific width and height, you can click the lock key to input your preferred resolution.
You can also see the adjusted resolution on the preview screen.
There are 3 locations in Doodly where you can set up your video resolution:
1. Create New Video
2. Video Settings
3. Export screen
Lastly, another great feature at the bottom of the video settings screen is the AutoSave option. This is a very helpful tool in making sure that your work gets saved every minute. In case you forget to save your work, Doodly’s autosave is always to the rescue. Now that’s peace of mind. To enable, just tick the box beside Enable AutoSave and hit Apply.
I hope it helped you become more familiar with each tool. What’s your favorite menu within Video Settings? Let us know. We’re happy to hear from you. Don’t have Doodly yet? What are you waiting for, go on and give it a try. 🙂
