We often see explainer videos with a white background, but have you ever thought of adding a background image to your explainer video? Yes, we can use different colors or an image as our background. A background in a presentation is meant to attract the attention of viewers. It gives your video that “complete package” look. While Doodly comes with a whiteboard, two chalkboards, a glass board effect, and the ability to use different colored backgrounds, today we are going to go over three more different background ideas for you to apply in Doodly.
As we all know, Doodly allows us to import our own images so we can use them as props or as background for our videos. You can import your custom image into either the Props or Characters tab of Doodly’s assets panel.
There are two methods by which you can create your own background in Doodly. The first method is by importing the image into the assets panel and the second is by adding your image through video settings.
To add your background image to Doodly, follow these steps:
1. Go to the Props tab of the assets panel.
2. Click the blue “+” sign.
3. When the “Add one prop” appears, select Browse files.
4. Locate the background you saved on your computer and hit Continue.
5. After importing the image, drag it onto the blank canvas and make it as big as possible so it fills the screen.
If you are a first-time Doodly user, you will probably import your background this way, which is perfectly fine. However, there is a tendency for you to unintentionally nudge your image as you continue to edit your scene. As a result, your background will appear to be moving when you play the video.
Video backgrounds are supposed to stay still as your video transitions to the next scene. As you can see in the video below, manually adding the background image to each blank scene causes the background to move when the scene is played.
Another way to manage your background image from the asset panel is by duplicating the first scene where your background is on. This method can help you create a seamless video transition. However, you can still accidentally move your background in the process. Even the tiniest movement is easily noticed as your scene starts to play.
For these reasons, we advise importing your background image from the Video Settings instead.
Importing your image through Video Settings is the preferred method for creating a custom background. To do this, you have to:
Importing your image this way provides a more stable background. We will use this method as we try to look into the different background ideas.
The best thing about these three background sources is that it is free to use! Let’s start with stock illustrations from Pixabay.
There are several royalty-free images that you can get from the internet, but one of the most popular sites that provide royalty-free images is Pixabay. Pixabay is a free stock photo platform. Unlike other websites offering free images, pixabay can be used without attributions, watermarks, or fees imposed on its users, but you are welcome to donate any amount.
Pixabay has several categories for its assets. Apart from images, they also provide free videos and music.
When searching for a background, you can use keywords like “background,” “gradient background,” “wallpaper,” or “backdrop” if you have no topic on top of your head yet. One thing to consider is ensuring that your background has a space where you can put your texts and other assets. In addition, when selecting your backdrop, choose a light color with fewer graphics.
1. Go to the website pixabay.com and search for an image you can use as a background.
2. After choosing a background, select Free Download. As you can see below, you can use Pixabay even if you don’t create an account.
3. Once you’ve downloaded the image to your desktop, upload it to Doodly.
4. After importing the image from the video settings in Doodly, you can start moving the frame around to capture the portion of the image you want to appear in your video. Just be careful not to include the transparent sides of the frame, as it will result in a white border on your background. After that, click DONE.
Let’s try adding some characters and observe the background when the video is played:
As you can see above, adding the new scene automatically gets the same background as the first scene. Best of all, the background is stable when we play the video.
Sometimes, you must change the font color to make it appear more visible in your scene. If the background is neither dark nor light, you can add a box behind the text to make it look more prominent and readable in your video. Now, if you can’t find the right shape or color, you can create your vector image.
Vectr is also a free graphics software used to create vector graphics. Since it is online-based, you can use it on both Mac and Windows computers. Vectr’s interface is simple and easy to navigate, unlike other graphic software.
Here’s how you can create your own vector shape:
1. Go to the website vectr.com and click Use Online. No need to create an account.
2. Click Pages.
3. Set the resolution to 1920 x 1080 to match Doodly’s resolution.
4. You can zoom out of the screen so you can see the entire page.
5. Select the shape you wish to use for your Doodly video. You can style it by adding color, border, shadow, and opacity.
6. Click Export after you have completed editing your shape. You can export your image as SVG, PNG, JPEG, or VECTR.
7. After exporting, you can import the shape into Doodly via Video Settings. This time, we will include the entire sides of the image in our background. This should create a “pop-out” effect on our uploaded background.
Let’s see how it looks:
Lastly, we have Canva as a source of background. Canva is another graphic design tool that provides excellent images for your social media needs and presentations.
To access Canva:
1. Log in to canva.com and click Presentation.
2. Make sure your background size matches the resolution you will use for Doodly. You can customize the size by clicking Resize and typing in your preferred size.
3. Click Template to choose your background. You can personalize each preset template by removing the texts and designs on it if you don’t need them. You can also add new props by going to Elements.
4. Once you have selected your background, download them to your computer.
5. Lastly, upload the background to Doodly.
Let’s take a look at our video using Canva’s background:
That completes our three background ideas for Doodly. We hope this helps with your graphic needs in your presentation. Until next time 🙂
