Putting assets together to create a video presentation is so much fun! It brings out the creativity and the artistic side of everyone in terms of video editing.
With Doodly, even if this is just your first time creating some animation, you still end up having a professional-looking presentation. It is no secret at all, thanks to our super easy-to-use assets. Doodly’s assets make our videos look polished and eye-catching.
Now we all know how easy it is to add these assets to our videos but have you tried exploring all of their features? Well, in this blog, we will take a closer look at the main assets – characters, texts and props. You might be overlooking some of their fine features so let’s go check them one by one.
But first….
If you are an existing Doodler, you definitely know where the assets are but if this your first time to use Doodly, I’m thrilled to tell you that assets are located within Doodly’s Edit Video page, and here’s how you can access it:
1. After you log in to your Doodly account, you will first see the My Videos screen. Click Create New Video.
2. A pop-up screen will appear. Select a background style for your video, give it a title then hit Create. Let’s leave the resolution to 480p for now.
You can update your board style, title, and resolution at any time so don’t worry, you’re not stuck with your choices. You can still change it under Video Settings.
3. After you hit Create, You will be routed to the Edit Video screen where the Asset Panel is located.
Please note that the number of assets available may vary depending on your Doodly package.
Now let’s take a closer look at each asset starting with scenes.
Scenes are preset backgrounds, settings, or locations. The good thing about having scenes is that if you have no concept yet for your video but you know your topic, scenes give you several layouts for you to choose from.
Say your topic is about the school, scenes have several presets all ready for school. All you need to do is pick one, and if you need to modify anything, you can do so.
Each object within scenes is movable. If you just want to use the background, or remove some props in the scenes, you can easily do so.
You will get below message every time you attempt to replace an existing scene in your board:
Characters are cartoon-made persons or people and they come in different varieties based on their profession, ethnicity, gender, emotions, gesture, status, and other things. Let’s try to add some characters to our chosen scene a while ago.
Sometimes you may need to resize some characters to make them look in proportion with the rest of the props in your scenes. There are some characters though that you cannot turn super small. If that is the case, you have to adjust your other props to make them look in proportion with the rest of the assets.
With the image above, picture A shows the original size of the students after they have been dragged from the assets panel. We tried to adjust its size and make it look smaller but the maximum size we could turn them small is not small enough to make the bus look bigger. It doesn’t look right to see students outside of the school building walking and they are just as tall as the bus so what we did is to adjust the size of the bus instead and make it bigger as shown in picture B.
Apart from adjusting their size, we can also adjust the character’s position in the scene, say we put them in front of your board for them to appear as if they are in front of the camera and turn them bigger among all the other assets.
Your props consists of all different objects that you might use for your presentation. Please note that you can always upload your own props or characters if you couldn’t find an item you need. You can do this by simply clicking the “+” sign of the asset panel, locate the object from your desktop then hit Continue.
If you can’t upload your object, try to drag it to your downloads folder and upload it from there.
When you click a character, props, or text, you see a dashed line with menu options on top and a “rotate” icon. These are the things we use to edit our assets. We will look at each function in a little while.
We have lots of fonts to choose from under the Text tab but in case you want to add some more, you can always import your own font style. There are lots of resources on the internet where you can get your free font. An example is from fonts.google.com.
Also, text has its own edit menu with 4 icons to help you customize it. Text menu includes: asset settings, bring forward, send backward and delete.
Under the Sounds tab are all different types of audio files or tracks. Doodly’s tracks are all royalty-free so you can use them in your videos without having any copyright issues. Doodly has two kinds of track: music and sound effects.
Just like texts, props, and characters, you can also upload your own track and use it in your video. You can even record your own voice as a voice-over.
As promised, we will take a closer look at the main assets – characters, props and text.
There are two ways to add an asset to your blank canvas. It’s either you drag and drop the objects, or double-click the item from the assets panel. For text though, you just have to drag them in your canvas.
To resize your asset, simply click it from your canvas. Once an asset is clicked, you will see a dashed-line with 9 small squares surrounding your object. When you hover on those tiny squares, you will see a double-sided arrow. Click on the arrow and adjust the objects to make it smaller or bigger.
You also see a “cross” double-sided arrow while hovering on your clicked object. This allows you to move your asset to different areas of your canvas. When you see the cross, just click the asset and drag it to your preferred location.
You can move characters and position them behind or infront of another character or props by just clicking the backward and forward icon. There’s also a delete button for every asset that you can use to remove assets in your scenes. Another way to delete is by just clicking an asset and hitting the delete button on your keyboard.
Sometimes it is difficult to select an asset if there are too many objects in your scene. If that is the case, you can go to the Layers menu and select the item you wish to modify or delete. This will automatically highlight the object and from there, you can either move, edit or delete an asset from your scene.
The asset settings can be found right after you clicked an item in your scene. It is the gear icon which is the first menu found right after you clicked an object in your scene.
When you click the gear icon, a pop up window appears. Let’s look at each feature.
X & Y are the coordinates of your item. It tells you the actual location or area where your asset is set on your screen. The good thing about having the X and Y axis is that if you want to place your characters or props in the same location for your next scene or for a new presentation, all you need to do is copy the X & Y coordinates.
Width & height tells you the exact size of an object. Same with X & Y, you can just simply take note of the width & height of your asset to have a uniform size across all scenes if you wish to use the same props.
Just like the X & Y axis as well as the width & height, rotate helps you set up the exact position of your asset. For the rotate function, you can move an asset using the rotate icon or if you have certain characters that are rotated, and you want to copy the same orientation, you can take note of their rotate number and just copy it to the next scene.
We love the flip function. With this feature, you can flip the props and characters horizontally. If their hand is pointing to the left but you need them to point to the right, you can click the flip icon then just like that, your character is now pointing to the right.
There are 2 ways to flip an asset: through their asset settings or by just simply clicking the flip icon.
This menu allows you to change the color of the outline of an asset. The default outline is black. This menu is helpful especially if you are using a board that has a custom color. In most cases, Doodly automatically adjusts the outline of assets placed on darker boards such as the chalkboards black and green. You can change the outline color by either clicking the color palette, choosing from available present colors or typing in the color’s hex code.
Opacity adjusts the visibility of an asset. You can go from 100% visible to 0% which makes assets invisible. This is such a great feature, especially when working on some spooky assets like ghosts.
Enter animation allows you to decide if you wish to have an object drawn or make it automatically appear on your screen without being drawn. This is a good feature especially if you have too many props on your scene. Some of those can just be set to appear immediately instead of waiting for it to be drawn. This saves time especially if your voice-over or audio track is just short. But of course, if you need to explain certain things, drawing each object will be a great idea.
Apart from modifying enter animation from the asset settings, you can also modify this feature from the Layers menu and just update duration time to zero.
Exit animation lets you decide if you wish to erase an asset after it appears on the screen. If you choose to erase, an eraser icon appears on the screen to erase the asset.

Doodly’s tracks are royalty-free so you can use them without worrying about copyright issues. You can also upload your own audio tracks if you wish to. You can set up a sound for both enter and exit animation. This is a great way to catch your audience’s attention. This helps highlight certain points in your presentation too.
Invert feature simply turns black outline to white or vice versa. If you are using Doodly rainbow, turning on “Invert” changes the color of your asset from a dark color to light or light color to dark.
As we have mentioned, Doodly automatically adjusts your outline depending on the board style you choose. If you are in the middle of video editing and you suddenly decide to use a black outline instead of white, you can turn on the Invert function to do so.
Imported files can also be inverted as shown in the video below.
Doodly Rainbow lets you add colors to your assets or, if you wish to go all black and white in your presentation, you can just turn this feature off. Turning on Doodly rainbow won’t make your existing scene colored if you are working on black and white assets. You can though add colored assets to your black and white scene. If your goal in your presentation is to highlight only characters, you can try working on all black and white backgrounds or scenes then making just your characters colored.
By the way, you might notice we didn’t discuss the pencil icon on top of each character. That is the Edit Asset settings where it mostly consists of draw path settings and we have a separate blog discussing all that.
We have just completed discussing the Asset Settings!
I hope you learned new features today and use it in your video presentation too.
Until next time! 🙂
